50,000 Environmental Riots.
The World Service had a programme called, can China go green?
It is fronted by Jonathon Porritt and whilst part of it comes over as a PR vehicle for the Chinese state there is the odd interesting fact in there, if you listen carefully.
In the second programme [MP3], mentioned in passing [08:50] by an environmental lawyer, was the fact that in China last year there were some 50,000 environmental riots, mostly by peasants alarmed that the pollution and deaths caused by factories and industry near them. An astonishing figure, so high, and yet I think if you searched the Chinese media that you wouldn’t see any thing like that.
The first programme is here it is as an MP3.
