“Private” Antisemitism?

with 4 comments

It doesn’t seem to be getting better by the day, now we have a problem of school children in Madrid invoking anti-Semitism, the JTA reports:

“JERUSALEM (JTA) — Israel’s embassy in Madrid has received dozens of postcards from Spanish schoolchildren containing anti-Semitic messages.

On Sunday, Israel lodged a formal complaint with the Spanish government charging that Spanish schools are promoting anti-Semitic and anti-Israel ideas among young children.

Some of the postcards read “Jews kill for money,” “Leave the country to the Palestinians” and “Go somewhere where they will accept you,” Haaretz reported.

Other letters addressed to the ambassador, Rafi Shotz, read: “How many Palestinians have you murdered today?” and “Mr. Ambassador, you should think about not killing the Palestinian children and elderly. I don’t know if it doesn’t bother you, having to murder people. You should leave Palestine,” according to Ynet.

In a phone call with Foreign Ministry’s deputy director of European affairs, Naor Gilon, Spanish Ambassador to Israel Alvaro Iranzo said that the letters were not part of Spain’s national education curriculum and appear to be a private initiative.

As if being a private antisemitic initiative, somehow makes it better? Hmm.

Update 1: Ana, one of my readers, reminds us of El Mundo’s past racism.

And Pew on negative attitudes in Spain and other European countries.

Update 2: Here’s the Stephen Roth Institute for the Study of Contemporary Antisemitism and Racism 2008/2009 report on Spain, not good reading.

  3. I think the media in Spain is very anti-Israel and occasionally downright anti Semitic, see for instance this piece from El Mundo

Because Spain’s Jewish community has traditionally kept a very low profile (really the only sensible thing to do when Franco was in power) it has been suggested that Spaniards associate Jews entirely with Israel which they see in a negative light.

There is some information on negative perception of Jews in Spain here.

  4. thanks Ana, I wonder how much of it has to be with the mix of old fashion fascist ideas/lumpen Catholicism that might be present in Spain.

    I never liked El Mundo.
