Judeosphere has a depressing piece on Hugo Chavez’s Anti-Semitic “News” Site.

Update 1: I shouldn’t have to spell it out, but one of my readers can’t quite see the connections.

The above antisemitic website,, is run by Martín Sánchez, the Venezuelan Consul General in San Francisco and by Gonzalo Gómez an active member of the governing party, PSUV.

Given the nature of consular officials it is highly unlikely that Sr. Sánchez would have commenced this endeavour (or continued with it) without the approval of his government and its uppermost leaders.

Further, give the the nature of the populist authoritarian regime run by Hugo Chavez, it is highly unlikely that they would run anything which is counter to the broad policies of the regime.

For example, if hypothetically they had posted articles praising capitalism and American imperialism then Sr. Sánchez and Sr. Gómez would probably be out of their jobs before you could say “Arroz”.

Add to that, the fact that President Chavez is apparently an avid reader of, according to Vheadlines:

“ is on a roll after it discovered that President Chavez has been reading some of the commentaries published on the right hand side of its web page.

Before opening his twitter service and during a break in a Council of Ministers meeting, Chavez mentioned criticisms written by contributors regarding internal elections.”

The ADL has an informative piece on it too.

Finally, for those blind to anti-Jewish racism here’s an article on Venezuela and antisemitism:

“The president of the Jewish community in Venezuela on Monday accused Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez of promoting anti-Semitism and giving the phenomenon legitimacy.

Speaking at the World Jewish Congress conference in Jerusalem on Monday, Abraham Levy Ben Shimol said “you probably hear of many anti-Semitic incidents, but where we live, the anti-Semitism is sanctioned; it comes from the president, through the government, and into the media. Since the government is very involved in the day-to-day lives of its constituents, its influence is much more effective.””

  1. I am sure Oliver Stone will address that in his new film…..when pigs fly.

  2. Now, I dislike Hugo Chavez as much as I dislike all socialists, but this post is very misleading.

This website is not linked to Hugo Chavez in any way. It is funded by two people who share some political views with Chavez and may or may not have met the guy.

I’m all for bringing down international socialism, but there’s no need to fabricate scandal to do it.

  3. Reading that stuff I was astonished how it echoed earlier anti-Jewish propaganda from the Catholic Church…

  4. I have updated the post for the benefit of P.

  5. Since Chavez’s new friends are the Mullah’s in Iran, I am sure part of this is simply throwing some red meat to his new allies much like Mussolini went along with a Manifesto of Race in 1938 to appease Hitler, despite Mussolini from 1922-1938 had never bothered the Jewish community in Italy.

  6. The site doesn’t seem to be particularly concerned with Jews at all.

  7. Indeed Andrew,

I think the rise in antisemitism in Venezuela is a comparatively recent phenomena, not with standing a certain lingering attitude that might exist amongst some Catholics in the region.

  8. skidmarx,

So you can’t see the racism at

  9. I wasn’t disputing the content of the site (though I couldn’t find the text you quoted on the page you linked to on VHeadlines – your Google research skills are excellent, by the way).

The issue I had was that you called it ‘Hugo Chavez’s News Site’. Which it quite clearly isn’t. If you had said, ‘News Site run by cronies close to socialist clown Hugo Chavez’ that would have been better, though the way that you try to smear by association is naughty.

And this time you can say that I’m accusing you of arguing in bad faith! Because this time you are!

  10. P,

Again, you might want to be less of a pedant when it comes to anti-Jewish racism and do some research of your own on what’s happened in Venezuela and El Presidente’s views…

Not that you will….of course 🙂

  12. I’ve read apporea, I’m not an anti-Semite, all good

  13. So what ?

You are answering a question that wasn’t answered.

Do you see any anti-Jewish racism at

    25/07/2010 at 17:48

  14. oh yes, it is disgracful. I think I’d be more inclined to fault Chavez for having not sacked the guy, rather than acusing Chavez of antisemitism for having read it. I mean it is an outrageous oversight on Chavez’ part, who is losing friends left, right and centre, but is there much else to suggest he is antisemitic himself?

    25/07/2010 at 19:39

  15. I suspect some people wouldn’t fault Chavez if he were found sitting reading the Elders of Zion on the toilet

It would be far better if you and others took the time and trouble to research the background to Venezuelan antisemitism, which is a comparatively recent phenomena and made an effort to connect the dots….

    It is hardly an oversight….
