A Typical EDL Supporter?

with 6 comments

I am a bit busy at the moment and want to post more on the EDL, but in the interim here’s a question, is he a typical EDL supporter?

And if not, then why do they seem to be a magnet for thugs and would-be bombers?

The Torygraph from June 2010 has more:

“Police found a pipe packed with nails and screws and charged with powder in the 16 year old’s bedroom, and a pipe with a firework inside hidden under a waste oil tank at a nearby petrol station.

The youngster also had literature from the right wing groups the British National Party and the English Defence League, together with Nazi emblems.”

  1. I wouldn’t say it was a ‘typical’ EDL member, but I would say that there are probably a fair number of EDL members holding similar views.

  2. The real question is, why does the EDL gain support from such people?

  3. successful reactionary or fascists movements/organizations which try to appear “moderate” and “respectable” generally also attract a non-negligable number of people from the lunatic fringes of the reactionary/fascist right who want to take part in a less marginalised and more successful enterprise than their own marginal circles … which can seriously damage the quest for “respectability” of the larger organization😉

If you call yourselves the English Defence League you will attract such people. Simple as.

  5. Sorry, I should have made my point clearer, and use less rhetoric.

We are occasionally told that the EDL is *not* full of neo-nazis and BNPers, so I wonder why they then congregate with them?

    I don’t think it is pure chance….
